Extreme Weather Maps

I was part of the team that built the Extreme Weather Maps, a forecast page from the Weather desk at The New York Times. Readers pick the places that matter to them, and the page keeps watch over each one for tornadoes, hail, high winds, excessive rain, hurricanes and tropical storms, unhealthy heat and winter storms; boiling the National Weather Service's outlooks down to three plain risk levels, with national maps for every hazard and a detailed outlook for the days ahead. The page is also the front door to a free daily newsletter: on mornings when one of your places is at risk, an email arrives with a fuller report than the page itself, and the whole thing was designed to earn that sign-up.

I built the responsive layouts across the page, and its hero: the Your Places section, along with the system for adding and removing places, which carries the sign-up flow. I also lent a hand on the detailed outlook tables and the map section.
